Rhode Island Independence Day

Rhode Island Independence Day In-Person

What happened on May 4th in 1908? Why is the figure on top of the Rhode Island State House called 'The Independent Man?' What was the "lively experiment" of 1663?

Come find out the answers to these and other questions you might have about the smallest state in the United States of America on Saturday, May 4th, at 2:00pm. Susan Anderson from the Tiverton Historical Society will give a powerpoint presentation on "Rhode Island Independence Day" in the Community Room.

Susan is the Outreach and Education Director and webmaster for the Tiverton Historical Society, Chair of the Tiverton Historic Preservation Advisory Board, and secretary of the Tiverton Historical Cemeteries Commission. She was a member of the Tiverton Open Space Commission for 15 years, and was Chair of the Stone Bridge Area Improvement Task Force. She is most interested in the American Revolution and the role this area played during it. In her research, she discovered that her 1822 house in the Osborn-Bennet National Register Historic District is situated on land where Continental soldiers were encamped. However, the only things her late husband and she have unearthed while  digging their gardens are mule shoes and harnesses, pieces of pottery and old bottles, and lots of oyster shells.

Registration is not required for this program, but you may sign up below to receive reminders of this event.
