Women and the Sea: True Tales of Whaling Wives In-Person
Over 400 women accompanied their husbands on whaling voyages! Join Nancy Gentile from the New Bedford Whaling Museum as she explains:
- Early to mid 19th-century whaling wives: why they went and what they did on board
- Contents of a medicine chest and medical practices of the day -- typical diseases and chronic issues
- Whaling history in general on New Bedford, Nantucket, and Martha’s Vineyard

About the presenter: Nancy Gentile spent 39 years as a research librarian in various capacities in private and public libraries. After stints at the Newton Public Library and Millipore Corporation, her longest tenure was at the Robbins Library in Arlington, MA, where she was Head of Adult Services. Nancy has been a docent at the New Bedford Whaling Museum since 2017. She enjoys giving tours to student groups and to visiting adults weekly. Nancy resides in Mattapoisett with her husband Mark.
